You’re a mom and one thing I know that you know how to do well is pack a bag. But what about when you’re in the middle of nowhere and the “I’m hungryyyyyyy” or “I’m tiredddddddd”, etc. complaints start?
Well you better be prepared like Mary Poppins.
In this post I’m going to share what we carry in our Nature Bag. This isn’t all of it, by any means, but it’s the majority of what we take with us.
This is the second post in the Homeschool Nature Study series. Read the first post here!

The Contents of Our Nature Study Backpacks
Map

You’re going to obviously need a map if you plan on going anywhere new or in the backcountry.
Bag
Use the backpacks you already own. These are our favorites:
Nature Field Guides/Take along Guides
Nature guides are perfect for studying certain plants, trees, etc. when you’re actually surrounded by nature.
Water Bottle
The most important thing – water. Don’t forget it!
Nature Journaling Supplies

We do nature journaling in our homeschool. Exploring Nature with Children by Lynn Seddon has a nature journaling guide and we’ve also taken a Nature Journaling course a few years ago.
Oh, speaking of Lynn – check out her nature journaling on YouTube. Her nature journaling is amazing!
Nature Journals
Travel Watercolor Set
Travel Paintbrush
Pens
Pencils (for sketching)
Binoculars
Compass
Snacks
This is one you don’t want to forget! I’m sure you know this already, but snacks are especially important when that kid (there’s always one lol) complains about walking and not wanting to be there. 😉
Ziplock Bags
Waterproof Blanket
For when you need to sit your tush down, but don’t want to get wet. 🙂
The last thing you need to know about Nature Study Bags
The main purpose of your nature study backpack is for necessities and comfort because there will always be that one child who hates to walk. lol
